Harmful Effects of Addiction

Harmful Effects of Addiction

Addiction is a DISEASE and there are no two ways about it. And to top it all, it is a very nasty disease to have. It is the only disease that denies its own existence and resists treatment. Secondly, the medical definition of addiction is that it is a chronic and relapsing disease. Chronic diseases are like diabetes; you can control it but cannot cure it and relapsing refers to the fact that an alcoholic or addict can revert to drinking or using drugs even after staying clean and sober for some time. Third reason why it is a nasty disease is that the success rate is very low. It is the road less traveled. Some estimate that even after completing treatment in a rehabilitation center, only 20% of the patients will remain clean and sober. When we talk about the success rate we have to talk about a timeline. At the end of 5 years the success rate drops to 2-5%. From this discussion we can see that Recovery from alcohol and drugs is very elusive and unless the person is willing to go to any length to stay clean and sober he or she will not succeed. From all this discussion it is obvious that addiction and alcoholism is a very-very nasty disease. It affects the person at all levels. Physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, financially and socially, in fact there is no area of ones life that remains untouched by addiction. I have written in detail about the harmful effects of Marijuana, Brown Sugar and Alcohol on the human body. Today let us look at the harmful spiritual effects. When we talk about spirituality, we don’t refer to religious practices. Like going to the temple, mosque, church or gurudwara or keeping fasts etc. These are not being spiritual but only following rituals. Spirituality is more than that. Religion is for people who do not want to go to hell and spirituality is for people who have been to hell and back. In my opinion spirituality refers to relationships. A person has three important relationships in life. The first and foremost is relationship with oneself. If one does not have a relationship with oneself then one cannot have a relationship with others. Having a relationship with oneself starts by looking after oneself. Taking care of health and hygiene is for starters. Then it entails getting rid of resentments, jealousy, past pains, regrets etc. Balancing all the addictive behaviors. Basically, being at peace with oneself and feeling comfortable in ones own skin. The voices in your head will no longer irk you. You will no longer mind solitude. You will then have what is called a fit spiritual condition or have a good relationship with yourself. Life is all about relationships. Man is a social animal and family is the unit one has to start with. Addicts and alcoholics treat strangers with more courtesy than they do their own family members. This is a bitter truth. Family comes first. That is the harbor where I can come to rest and recuperate after facing the storms of day to day living in the outside world. It is not necessary for me to like my family, after all it is an accident of birth, but if I can not even be polite then my recovery has no meaning. It is worthless. After immediate family comes friends. Friends are the family we chose for ourselves. We share things with them without any hesitation and they can give us the appropriate feedback. Next comes relatives or extended family and then society at large. The third and most important relationship is with the God of your understanding. The 12 Step Program gives you complete freedom in choosing the God of your own understanding. It is a very important relationship. It offers hope, strength and succor in times of difficulty. God can stand for many things; Good orderly Direction; Group of Drunks or Drugees etc. It is not necessary to believe in a religious God. People who do find it easier but even agnostics and atheists can benefit from the program of 12 Steps. Even Pascal’s postulates logically explain why it is better to believe in God than not. If there is a God and you do not believe in it then you are depriving yourself of a source Great Power. In any case the term used in the 12 Step Program is Higher Power. All this is explained at Sahyog and that is why it is the Best Rehabilitation Center in Delhi.

Sahyog, Best Rehabilitation Center in Delhi

Sahyog Detox and De addiction Clinic is the Best Rehabilitation Center in Delhi. The main reason why it is the best is because of its success rate, which is much better than other rehabilitation centers. There are other reasons also why it is better than other rehabilitation centers, namely it is run by a doctor who himself is a recovering addict and alcoholic. This combination of a doctor and a recovering addict and alcoholic is not to be found anywhere else. Besides, the food and atmosphere is also very good. There is a visiting psychiatrist and a psychologist making regular calls.

Why Need for Rehabilitation Centre

Sahyog Detox and De addiction Clinic is the Best Nasha Mukti Kendra or Rehabilitation Center in Delhi. HOW CAN A REHABILITATION CENTER OR NASHA MUKTI KENDRA HELP YOU? If you suffer from the disease of alcoholism or addiction you need help. You are not going to recover from this disease on your own. The loved ones also cannot help you. A Rehabilitation Center or a Nasha Mukti Kendra is the only option left. While there are a lot of horror stories about Nasha Mukti Kendras but Sahyog Detox and De addiction Clinic is different. Firstly, it is run by a qualified M.B.B.S. doctor who himself was addicted to alcohol and drugs and has been clean and sober since 2002. Secondly, the food served is very good and you can eat as much as you want, there  are no ginti ki rotiyan. Thirdly, the patients are not required to do the menial chores like sweeping or swabbing or cleaning the toilets. Fourthly, and most importantly, the therapy at Sahyog Detox and De addiction Clinic is very good and we have an excellent success rate. If you are addicted to alcohol or drugs you are going to experience withdrawal symptoms when you get admitted and do not get your daily dose or fix. We can help you detox, i.e., help you overcome the withdrawal symptoms by giving you medicines. But the treatment of addiction and alcoholism is not by medicines. For that we follow the Twelve Step Program. After the detox phase which lasts a week or ten days at the most, the treatment is through behavior or group therapy and one on one counselling. The Twelve Steps are the most successful modality to treat addiction or alcoholism.  The Rehabilitation Center or Nasha Mukti Kendra gives you a firm grounding in the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.  Plus, the Nasha Mukti Kendra or Rehabilitation Center acts as a guarded environment, where there is no entry of alcohol or drugs. The Nasha Mukti Kendra or Rehabilitation Center not only helps you stop alcohol or drugs it also helps you to stay stopped, which is more difficult.

Sahyog Detox and De addiction Clinic

As a doctor and an individual who became clean and sober in 2002, I began to appreciate what an excellent opportunity I had to help other suffering addicts and alcoholics and do my part to help improve the treatment and recovery scenario in our society. From this was born Sahyog, the Rehabilitation Centre that I founded in 2006 and have been running since. Sahyog Rehabilitation Centre is committed to providing the best treatment possible, treatment that can and does lead to steady and sustained, rich and meaningful, productive and responsible recovery from addiction and emotional issues. We introduce troubled and often disheartened sufferers to a disciplined, systematic and comprehensive self-care regimen and the support groups and communities that actually liberate them not just from substance abuse or dysfunctional behaviour, but also from dysfunctional thinking, emotional patterns, perceptions and responses and the self-destructive coping mechanisms that perpetuate the condition. We don’t make our patients do menial chores and we provide excellent, tasty food. We treat people by empowering them. Sahyog Rehabilitation Centre has a significantly higher success rate than the average. While focussing on the core disease of addiction and alcoholism, we also ensure proper treatment of co-morbidities. We seek to promote benchmark services and best practices. While providing the patient referred to us with a comprehensive residential programme that addresses all the basic aspects of medical attention and recovery from substance abuse, we work jointly with referring doctors for best results. For best results, the convergence of clinical specialists, rehabilitation centres, therapists and support groups to treat addiction should really be a systematic, coordinated and continuing network of resources that a recovering person can draw on to address all the varied forms of damage that the condition gives rise to. The initial presentation may be before a doctor or psychiatrist. In many if not most cases, immediate medical treatment and detoxification becomes the first priority. Some are taken coercively by family members straight to a rehabilitation centre with their own health and well-being in view. Their subsequent trajectory depends on the nature of the training given there, whether the centre follows benchmarks and protocols such as the use of Twelve Step Recovery Programme, interacts with other relevant treatment professionals and facilities, and ensures that the patient stays long enough to take a meaningful pause in life, receive the necessary inputs and practice living accordingly. The proliferation of centres is a necessary and welcome part of bringing addiction issues to the forefront and providing necessary services, and provider/patient ratio. But with time, we may see how inadequate expertise, uneven standards and lacunae in inter-professional connectivity with other medical professionals have impaired enduring success in this already challenging and distressing segment of medical care. As a doctor and a recovering person myself, I am fortunate in being able to bring my medical training and experience as an addict and alcoholic to ensure that all key issues are flagged at the outset so that an appropriate, comprehensive and multidimensional life training plus clinical treatment approach is followed from the start. Besides this, I conduct sessions myself and counsel patients regularly. Counselling too varies. Counsellors who are recovering alcoholics and addicts practicing Twelve Step Programme, with several years of recovery and experience are employed. Professional psychologist and psychiatrist also form a part of our team and comprise a vital form of input. The Twelve Step Program plays a central role at Sahyog at all stages-from experience sharing and dealing with denial at admission to multiple formats of Twelve Step Program based meetings- through the entire period of awareness building and life training during the patient’s stay- on to introducing the person to 12 Step recovery meetings in the outside world- to lay the foundations for a healthy future using the meetings and the program to deal with life on life’s terms- to providing mentoring, guidance and handholding as the foundations for a new life are laid- to finally as a commitment to being there for the person whenever the need arises. AA and NA have helped hundreds of thousands of people around the world become clean and sober. At Sahyog we conduct meetings and the reading and writing work is also based on AA/NA literature. The input sessions are also based on Twelve Steps. These multiple Twelve Step inputs are set in a day that also includes yoga and meditation. What gives us the greatest joy and satisfaction is escorting those who are completing residential treatment to the AA and NA meetings that will play a central role in patients’’ ongoing effort to maintain sobriety and develop the life skills that can help reintegrate them into society.

Procedure for Detox in Sahyog Clinic

Sahyog Detox and De addiction Clinic is a rehabilitation center which works to help suffering addicts and alcoholics. We admit patients for a period of 4-5 months(average) but it can take longer also. We follow the 12 Step Program of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Even medical textbooks say that the 12 Step Program offers the highest success rate in treatment of addiction and alcoholism. The success rate in treatment of alcoholism and addiction is very low to begin with. Sahyog Detox and De addiction Clinic has a much better success rate than most other facilities. The treatment at Sahyog Detox and De addiction Clinic is mainly through counselling, behavior therapy and group therapy. After the detoxification process is over the patients have to follow a proper routine. Wake up at 7, do yoga and meditation and after breakfast there are 5-6 sessions during the day. We start with a reading session where people read from the Big Book and other Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous literature. They also share their identification in the reading session. The reading session is followed by the writing session. In that they first write about themselves and later write about the 12 Steps till Step 5. Writing session is followed by the Input session which stands for information put forward. It is like a lecture and there are many diverse topics ranging from the Disease Concept to the 12 Steps. After Input there is a lunch break followed by rest time. In the afternoon patients have a session called Group Discussion. In that they relate the topic taught in Input to their own lives and talk about themselves. After that thrice a week they write their thoughts and feelings of the day in Inventory writing and share them aloud with the counsellor. In the evening they have a in-house Alcoholics Anonymous meeting followed by dinner, meditation and lights out at 11. This is how the day is structured and they follow this regimen from Monday to Saturday.

At Sahyog detox and de addiction clinic we follow a proper routine which is a must for any rehabilitation center. Rehabilitation in Hindi means punarwas. That is to settle again or inculcate a new discipline in ones life. The wake up is at 6.45 am and the morning prayer and tea at 7.00 am. At 7.45 am there is yoga and meditation. Breakfast is served around 9.15 am and from 10 am sessions start. First is the reading session, followed by writing session. After which we have a lecture. Then lunch is served after which there is rest time. At 3.30 pm there is group discussion. There is an inventory writing session at 5 pm three days in a week. At 7 pm there is a in house AA/NA meeting, followed by dinner at 9.15 pm. Meditation again at 10.45 pm and lights out at 11 pm. SAHYOG

Sahyog Detox and De addiction Clinic is a  rehabilitation center par excellence. It is the only rehabilitation center run by a doctor which follows the 12 Step program. You have recovering addicts running rehabs and doctors running detoxes but this combination of a doctor and a recovering addict is not available anywhere. The therapy available in Sahyog is group therapy and behavior therapy. Besides that individual counselling is also imparted. The therapy is excellent as our success rate speaks for itself. Addiction is a disease with very low success rate but compared to other rehabilitation centers our success rate is much higher. The food is really delicious. We have excellent cooks who have been with us since the beginning of Sahyog. The menu is simple, roti sabzi dal chawal but it is made very well and the patients can eat as much as they want, there is no restriction on amount. The breakfast varies and that is served in limited quantities. Sometimes there is bread and eggs, sometimes aloo ka parattha for breakfast. The rehab I went to used to serve limited number of rotis and many a time I had to go hungry and fill my stomach with water but at Sahyog mealtimes they keep asking you if you want more rotis. There is greenery and flowers and open lawn, in fact the yoga session is conducted in the open in mornings. All in all Sahyog is a happy place where patients can recover from the disease of alcoholism and addiction and substance abuse
