The Twelve Step Program is the most effective tool to deal with alcoholism and addiction. This is a known fact. While there are other modalities to deal with alcoholism and addiction the Twelve Steps offer the highest success rate. That program is of course Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous is a worldwide fellowship of men and women who share their hope, strength and experience to recover from the disease of alcoholism and addiction. The Twelve Steps are the same in Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, only alcohol is replaced by addiction. It is totally voluntary, no one is forced to join it but millions of people worldwide attend meetings and keep their disease of alcoholism and addiction at bay. Stages of Addiction

Phases of Addiction – Chronic Phase

This phase of Addiction is characterized by noticeable physical, mental and social deterioration. There is a marked breakdown in relationship with family.

ETHICAL BREAKDOWN

The person starts telling lies to cover up his or her addiction and regarding money and time spent outside. They start borrowing money from near and dear ones and acquaintances. When borrowing also does not suffice they may even resort to stealing money. They will go to any extent and do not hesitate to break values or degrade themselves to get their quota of drinks or drugs.

PARANOIA AND HALLUCINATIONS

The person may start suspecting their spouse of infidelity without any basis. They may be afraid that others are plotting against them. They might experience hallucinations – see or hear things which are not present. The hallucinations can be visual, auditory or tactile. This marks a very serious stage of alcoholism and can lead to delirium tremens and even death. This usually occurs when the alcoholic stops drinking alcohol for a few days.

LACK OF MOTOR CO-ORDINATION

The person is not able to do simple things like even holding a cup of tea or a glass of water without spilling it. Routine tasks like shaving become impossible till the person steadies himself with a few drinks of alcohol. This is the stage when a vicious cycle sets in. The person uses alcohol or drugs to become ‘normal’. When he or she does not drink alcohol or use drugs he or she experiences withdrawals.

THE ONLY SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM IS TO STOP TAKING ALCOHOL AND DRUGS TOTALLY.

ALCOHOLISM TREATMENT IN SAHYOG CLINIC

Alcoholism is a disease and it is a very nasty disease to have. This is the only disease that denies its own existence and resists treatment. Secondly, the medical definition of alcoholism is that it is a chronic relapsing disease. That means that it is incurable and even after a person leaves alcohol he can start again. Thirdly, it is nasty because the success rate is very low. At the best of times it is 20% at the end of 1 year and goes on decreasing as time goes on.
The ism in alcoholism is “incredibly short memory. Alcoholics tend to forget very fast what all bad things have happened to them as a result of alcohol abuse. They forget the arguments at home with loved ones, the vitiated atmosphere at home, difficulties at work, the physical harms, accidents, all is forgotten.
Alcohol is an excellent solution-it dissolves marriages, careers, health, finances.
But the alcoholic is the last person to acknowledge he has a problem even though he is the first to experience that something is wrong. The fact that there is something wrong with the alcoholic is apparent to the people around him.
The denial of the alcoholic is so cunning, baffling, clever and powerful that he or she becomes powerless in front of it.
Not every person who drinks alcohol is an alcoholic, in fact only 12% of people who drink alcohol are alcoholics, rest are social drinkers. The difference between a social drinker and an alcoholic is that the social drinker is able to guarantee the amount he is going to drink and is able to guarantee his behavior after drinking alcohol, whereas, the alcoholic is not able to do so.

SAHYOG

Sahyog Detox and De addiction Clinic is a  rehabilitation center par excellence. It is the only rehabilitation center run by a doctor which follows the 12 Step program. You have recovering addicts running rehabs and doctors running detoxes but this combination of a doctor and a recovering addict is not available anywhere.

The therapy available in Sahyog is group therapy and behavior therapy. Besides that individual counselling is also imparted. The therapy is excellent as our success rate speaks for itself. Addiction is a disease with very low success rate but compared to other rehabilitation centers our success rate is much higher.

The food is really delicious. We have excellent cooks who have been with us since the beginning of Sahyog. The menu is simple, roti sabzi dal chawal but it is made very well and the patients can eat as much as they want, there is no restriction on amount. The breakfast varies and that is served in limited quantities. Sometimes there is bread and eggs, sometimes aloo ka parattha for breakfast. The rehab I went to used to serve limited number of rotis and many a time I had to go hungry and fill my stomach with water but at Sahyog mealtimes they keep asking you if you want more rotis.

There is greenery and flowers and open lawn, in fact the yoga session is conducted in the open in mornings.

All in all Sahyog is a happy place where patients can recover from the disease of alcoholism and addiction and substance abuse

ALCOHOLISM

Alcoholism is a misunderstood disease. Firstly, people will readily agree that is a Disease but they still blame the person for being an alcoholic. Do you blame a person for having Diabetes? People think it is a moral failing or a lack of will power. Alcoholics Anonymous has clearly stated and I also agree as a recovering Alcoholic that the alcoholic is powerless over his alcoholism. The Disease concept of Alcoholism was first propounded by Alcoholics Anonymous in 1935. The disease of alcoholism is Primary, i.e., it is not linked to any other disease but there is a genetic basis for the disease as children of alcoholics are more prone to alcoholism. Secondly, it is a progressive disease. As can be seen in the intake of quantity by the alcoholic. Thirdly, it is a fatal disease. Untreated alcoholics die a premature, painful death or end up in jails, mental asylums or institutions.

The disease of alcoholism is unique in the sense that it is the only disease which denies its own existence and resists treatment. Denial is such a big part of every alcoholics psyche. Even if they agree they have an Alcohol problem they will insist that they themselves will take care of it. The denial part makes the disease of alcoholism clever, cunning, baffling and powerful.

The disease of alcoholism is incurable but treatable and the best treatment is the 12 Step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. The treatment can be started in a rehabilitation center and then continued by regular meeting attendance. Meetings are the best way of maintaining sobriety, in fact there is no other way. Treatment by psychiatrist is also tried but the results are not very good. Other modalities have their own limited success rate.
